As a result of Covid restrictions, Sarah Harding, the former “Girls Aloud” star faced delays in receiving her cancer treatment, which led to her death. By the time the restrictions were lifted and her treatment began, it was too late. Sarah’s cancer had spread to other parts of her body. Sarah died the horrific cancer death after ensuring unimaginable suffering.

Why did Sarah have to die for Covid patients to live?

The decision to sacrifice Sarah to save the lives of Covid patients was not taken lightly by the healthcare professionals. It is extremely difficult for a healthcare professional to sacrifice one life to save another. Thus, what constraint were healthcare professionals working under that forced them to make the difficult decision of sacrificing Sarah in order to save Covid patients? Who decided it had to be a binary decision between saving Sarah and saving Covid patients?

Why did Sarah have to die?

Sarah died because the hospital was unable to care for her and Covid patients simultaneously. Why was the hospital unable to care for Sarah and Covid patients concurrently? Hospitals are not designed to handle infectious diseases and other conditions at the same time. Why are hospitals not designed to treat infectious diseases and other conditions simultaneously? It is because hospitals continue to function using 19th century healthcare business models. Why does healthcare continues to use an outdated business model? We live in the most technologically advanced period in human history. Medical science and diagnostic technology have advanced beyond human imagination. Why were we powerless against Covid? In order to achieve this, healthcare professionals and policymakers need to change their mental models of healthcare. The major constraint in healthcare is a policy mental model that is rooted in the past. A mental model, which only provides a binary option between saving Sarah and saving the Covid patients is out of date. Moreover, it requires each of us as individual health care consumers to change our perceptions and expectations of healthcare.
