UK broke another Covid-19 death record yesterday: 1,325.
Yes, one thousand, three hundred and twenty-five people died on a single day in the UK from coronavirus.
Bringing the total number of deaths from the virus to 80 thousand.
And it…is…not… over…yet.
And the 80 thousand is not even an accurate estimate of the amount of excess death.
Secondary deaths are not included in the figure.
Those who died because of lack of treatment of other diseases.
They Are Not Numbers
For many people, those are simply numbers.
But for those who lost their love ones, those are not numbers.
They include fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, spouses, friends and work colleagues.
In December the government was warned of such an outcome, they refused to listen to the plea of the experts to act.
Now they are crying crocodile tears when they had the powers to prevent the deaths.
And You Mr. Mayor
The London Mayor has declared a ‘Major Incident’.
What the phrase ‘Major Incident’ political speak for, he alone knows.
He is behaving like a typical mayor who blames central government for their incompetence.
Is he not the Mayor of London?
Is he not the person in charge of London Transport?
Why can’t he close the London Underground?
Can there be a better place for spreading coronavirus than the London Underground?
If there was a terrorist incident in London, would he allow the underground to remain open?
Or would he fine people for driving into London if they were running away from terrorist?
He is as guilty of complicity in the deaths as the government.
The Press is also Complicit in the Deaths
During the 1980s, when the HIV pandemic was brewing, no media organisation reported on HIV because it was seen as a gay disease.
It took a movie star to get infected with the disease for the press to consider the pandemic news worthy.
With coronavirus, it’s not a question of lack of coverage, it’s a question of what is being covered.
Media organisations are in the business of entertainment.
So, instead of educating the public and holding the government accountable, they continue to entertain.
Coronavirus has not spread in the UK because it caught anyone by surprise as Mr. Johnson like to say.
It spread because of poor leadership and poor policy direction.
And it is the job of the media to hold governments accountable for poor decision making.
80 thousand people would not have died if the press had done it job.
The Way Froward
Mr. Johnson’s only hope is vaccination.
1,325 people died yesterday.
The question he needs to be answering is, is he willing to allow a thousand deaths per day until enough people are vaccinated?
What tangibles steps will he be taking until enough people are vaccinated?
